OBERON
The figurine of Elvenking Oberon was inspired by a Hungarian musical actor Szabó P. Szilveszter. Some years ago, I’ve made already a portrait of Szilveszter as Oberon, it was much smaller, since then I had not yet developed a constant scale, and was sitting on a beautiful piece of granite. I gave this figurine to the actor himself after some Operettszínház performance in 2014.
Then one day my father brought me a beautiful piece of wood and said that it would make a good throne for another Thranduil, but as I intended to make Thranduil on horseback (to be more precise, on deerback), that piece of wood was put in a box, where it kept turning inappropriately and gradually loosing particles of bark until I finally got the idea to repeat the figurine of Oberon and make him sit on it. This time the portrait resemblance was not so crucial, the inspiration for me was the whole image of the Elvenking from the Hungarian musical, unusual - truly elven – appearance of Szilveszter, his black and silver suit, long hair with a gray strand and mysterious patterns on his face. Actually, although a Midsummer Night's Dream has been my favorite play by Shakespeare since childhood (elves and theater at once - what could be better? Not to mention the fact that I was born on that very night!), there is no well-established classic image of Oberon, which I would take for myself as an ideal option, and although Hungarian production can be considered quite controversial, since it is not performed in the classical spirit and there are some additions to the plot, however, these plot moves are quite curious, and the image created by Szabó P. Szilveszter always seemed to me the most mysterious, fabulous, fantasy type of Oberon.
